A Message From Joe Riley, President of KWBUApril 26, 2010
This week we've been asking for your pledges to keep KWBU-FM as the strong NPR service you count on here in Waco. We've been preparing our budgets for KWBU-FM and TV over the last two months, and there's a gap between projected revenue and expenses for the next fiscal year. We've been talking with our partner, Baylor University, and for the coming year Baylor has pledged the same financial support as they provided this year. But that is their limit.
Baylor continues to be our strongest supporter, providing nearly half our income. The rest is provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and by you, the community of Waco. But community support has never been strong, and has declined significantly in the past two years. It amounts to less than a fifth of our overall budget. The shortfall we project for next year is significant - nearly $400,000.
We've made the very difficult decision to end the Television service of KWBU at the end of May.
KWBU-FM (103.3) will continue without any reduction in service.
Strong community support is not just a good idea. It's essential. To keep a healthy NPR service in Waco, I ask that you pledge your support now. If you're already a member, thank you. Please consider making an additional gift. Others have listened and appreciated public broadcasting in Waco, but have never contributed. Now is your time. The bigger the number of supporters, the stronger the message to others. Entry level for membership is just $35 a year. A dime a day. Please consider what you can afford, and call in your support today. Thank you.
