W.I.S.D. School Board Selects Pearland's Bonny Cain to Lead DistrictFeb. 1, 2011
Dr. Bonny Cain was unanimously recommended by the school board yesterday as the candidate of choice to lead Waco I.S.D. into its next chapter. A process that began late last summer when Roland Hernandez vacated the position culminated in the announcement, a decision that came on the heels of a visit to Pearland ISD, where what board members saw further convinced them that Dr. Cain was the right person for the job. Pat Atkins was one of those members.
Dr. Cain has been at the helm of Pearland I.S.D. since 2000. Under her leadership, the district did become the fourth largest "exemplary" district in the state in recent years, with a a "recognized" rating last year. Board member Angela Tekell was also among the visitors to her district, and came away impressed.
Bonny Cain has served in a number of positions in both teaching and administration in Pearland, working in the district for 12 years before becoming superintendent. Waco I.S.D. board members described her as a tough, no-nonsense boss who cares for her students. Pat Atkins saw a number of attributes in Cain that he thinks will serve Waco ISD well.
The next step in the process is a 21 day waiting period after which the board will sign Dr. Cain to a contract to make the hiring official. Cain will take over for assistant superintendent Sheryl Davis, who acted as interim superintendent following the departure of Hernandez to Corpus Christi. Waco NPR will have more reaction from Waco and Pearland regarding the announcement of Bonnie Cain as the candidate of choice in the coming days. For KWBU news, I'm Derek Smith.
