Act Locally Waco - January 18 - 24

Act Locally Waco Host Ashley Thornton highlights some of Waco's upcoming events, including several plans for Martin Luther King Jr Remembrance Day and the Waco Walks Museum Peek-In on January 20th. 

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Remembrance Day Events: 

Peace March

Both Zeta Phi Sorority and the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity invites the public to join them for the 23rd annual Martin Luther King Jr Peace March. The events begins at 9 a.m. in Indian Springs Park. The group will march across the bridge and continue to Bledsoe Miller community center for additional activities including a free community lunch. The groups are asking the public to also bring a canned good to donate for a food drive. 

Mission Waco Event

Mission Waco is hosting their annual celebration honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The event will begin at 10 a.m. at the  Jubilee Theatre near the corner of 15th and Colcord. The event will feature performances and speakers, as well as a free lunch,  a panel discussion at 11:45 a.m. and other community service projects from 1:15 - 3 p.m.

Keep Waco Beautiful

Keep Waco Beautiful is hosting a Brazos River Clean-up starting at 11 a.m. You can sign up for the event here online. 

Candlelight Vigil

The annual MLK Day candlelight vigil will be held at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park at the Elm Ave. end of the Suspension Bridge beginning at 6 p.m. The event will have seating available, but organizers are asking the public to bring their own candles.

Waco Walks 'Museum Peek In'

Waco Walks is hosting a “Museum Peek In” walk on Sunday, Jan. 20th at 2 p.m. at the Martin Museum of Art on Baylor campus just off University Parks. The group will take a three-mile stroll including brief peeks into several museums along the way, such as Mayborn, the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame, the Earle-Napier-Kinnard house and the Dr Pepper museum. Scout Troop 308

The Waco Community will have an all-girl troop after the Boy Scouts of America announced their program would open up to young women. Parents and their daughters are invited to find out more about Scout Troop 308 at rally day Tuesday, Jan. 22nd, from 7 to 8 p.m. at First Methodist Church of Waco on Cobbs. 

Pack of Hope Spaghetti Dinner

McLennan County Pack of Hope is holding its annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser on Tuesday, Jan. 22nd.  Pack of Hope is a local non-profit that provides backpacks filled with food items for school children who may need extra food to make it through the weekends or other school holidays.  The spaghetti dinner will take place from 5 – 7:30 p.m.  at Poppo Rollo’s Pizza on Valley Mills Drive.  The cost for the dinner will be $15.

Talitha Koum “Steel Magnolias” fundraiser

The Waco Civic Theatre is hosting a fundraiser for Talitha Koum on Thursday, Jan. 24th.  Attendees will get to see the dress rehearsal of the upcoming production of Steel Magnolias and also enjoy a complimentary intermission reception complete with wine, cupcakes and other appetizers. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $22 and all proceeds go to support Talitha Koum, a therapeutic learning center that specializes in providing a trauma-informed learning environment for Pre-K children.  For more information and to buy tickets visit the Talitha Koum Facebook page.
