We've talked about the great Nashboro label before - founded by Ernie's Record Mart in Nashville and heavily promoted on the clear channel radio monster WLAC, Nashboro released most of the best gospel artists at one time or another.
Nashboro also released hundreds of lesser-known acts, along with numerous one-off LPs and vanity productions. Somewhere in the middle fall the Philippian Gospel Singers, who recorded for both Nashboro and HOB Records over about a 10-year span. Not much is known about the group, and their records are hard to find - including this one, "Great Camp Meeting" from 1962. Copies routinely run for $25 or more on the used vinyl sites.
"Great Camp Meeting" though, is a good example of early '60s gospel - a small choir, backed by a mighty Hammond B-3 organ, energetically singing and clapping for all they're worth. It's the kind of performance that could stretch out for an hour at the close of a particularly emotional church service.
