Sat Aug 3 - Greater Bohemian Open Special Olympics
Lot’s of opportunities for some summer time “do gooding” this week… Tomorrow morning is the Greater Bohemian Open Golf Tournament. An annual tradition, it is definitely not your ordinary day on the links. You might find yourself putting with a pool cue or a croquet mallet among other non-standard equipment for example…The tournament is a 4-person scramble and all money supports training and competition for special Olympics athletes from the Heart of Texas Area. The Greater Bohemian takes place at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course from 8 AM to 1 PM. Participation is $85 per person. Breakfast and lunch are provided.
Sat Aug 3 - Volunteer Trail Maintenance Day (Waco Mammoth National Monument) (Waco Mammoth National Monument)
If you are a fan of the Waco Mammoth Site, tomorrow is your opportunity to do your part to keep the place looking good. It’s Volunteer Trail Maintenance day from 9 AM to 5 PM. All hands are needed to help spread a giant pile of mulch to spiff up the trails. Please bring your own wheel barrows, shovels, loppers, gloves, and protective eyewear. City of Waco Parks and Rec will provide the mulch and safety vests.
Sat Aug 3 - Salvation Army Stuff the Bus with School Supplies (Salvation Army)
Tomorrow is also Salvation Army Stuff the Bus day. You are invited to swing by any local Walmart and donate school supplies to stuff the bus. Buses will be on site from 8:30 AM until 6:30 PM.
Mon Aug 5 - Sustainable Waco Conference (MCC Sustainability Committee, Waco Friends of Peace/Climate, Center for Reservoir and Aquatics Research at Baylor University)
On Monday you are invited to meet with scientists, policymakers, and problem solvers to learn how to become better stewards of the planet. The Sustainable Waco Conference is a one-day conference that will feature current research regarding sustainability and climate change and will include breakout sessions with practical applications for individuals, community leaders, and educators. The conference takes place from 9 am to 4 pm. Tickets are only $15 which includes lunch, snacks, and beverages. The conference will meet at the Emergency Services Education Center located at 7601 Steinbeck Bend Road. You can register through the MCC Continuing Education website.
Mon Aug 5 - Silent Auction Fundraiser benefitting Shepherd’s Heart (Shepherd's Heart)
On Monday evening you are invited to Join Shepherd’s Heart Food Pantry for an evening of fun, food, music and a Silent Auction. The event will take place at the Baylor Club at McLane Stadium. All proceeds will help feed families right here in Waco.
Thu Aug 8 - Grains & Growers: A Farmers Market Friend-Raiser
On Thursday, The Downtown Farmers Market will be hosting Grains and Growers: a Farmers Market Friend-raiser at Balcones Distilling. Attendees will enjoy a complimentary drink ticket for a Balcones cocktail – or Luna Juice mock-tail), and samples of delicious local eats. A short presentation will highlight where the Market has been, where they are now, and where they are headed in furthering their mission to bring locally grown and produced goods to Downtown Waco. Tickets are $40. The event will take place from 6:00-8:00pm.
Fri Aug 2 - Mural Wrap and Block Party (Creative Waco and Brotherwell Brewing)
Several fun arts events this week…The ArtPrenticeship Programming is holding a wrap party tonight to celebrate completing not one , but two fantastic murals this summer. Join the artists at Brotherwell Brewing from 5 to 7 PM for a great time enjoying local food trucks, music, and activities the entire family.
Fri Aug 5 - Wine & Open Mic at Klassy Glass with Keep Waco Loud (Keep Waco Loud)
Monday is your chance to take the mic. Keep Waco Loud, is hosting an Open Mic at Klassy Glass on Austin Avenue. Performances will include comedy, music, improv, poetry, and more! It is free to sign up and is open to all ages. Sign up starts at 6:30. If you’d like to just enjoy the show, they will also have $5 wine!
Mon Aug 5 - Summer Indie Movies: Silhouette (Deep In the Heart Film Festival)
Monday is also free indie movie night at the hippodrome thanks to the Deep in the Heart Film Festival. This week you can get your horror fix! The film is Silhouette. It’s the R-rated story of Jack and Amanda Harms who set out into seclusion to begin their lives anew – we all know that never goes well.
