Act Locally Waco - Events October 4 - 10

This week on Act Locally Waco, KWBU's Kateleigh Mills and Brodie Bashaw bring you this week's upcoming events - like Waco Cultural Arts Fest, smooth jazz at An Evening With Ellington, Waco Walk to End Alzheimer's and Baylor Homecoming. 

Friday, Oct. 4  - 

Waco Cultural Arts Fest(Cultural Arts of Waco) ⟶Fri Oct 4 thru Sun Oct 6

This is truly a great week for the arts in Waco. This weekend, starting tonight and running through Sunday afternoon, is the Waco Cultural Arts Fest.  If you have never been, you should know that it is really six festivals combined into one, it includes artfest, wordfest, musicfest, dancefest, filmfest and sciencefest. That is a lot of fest! It truly includes something for everyone – from fine art to purchase, to plenty of opportunities for kids to create art of their own. The center of activity will be Indian Spring Park across from the Hilton, but there are events at several different venues around town.  Check the wacoartsfest.org website for all the schedules and details. 

Goddess: A Celebration of the Sacred Feminine(Kieran-Sistrunk Fine Art Gallery)

Tonight at the Kieran-Sistrunk Fine art Gallery on Washington Avenue, they are introducing an exhibit called “Goddess: A Celebration of the Sacred Feminine.”  The exhibit will include sculpture, paintings, and mixed media and the reception tonight will include live, body-painted models representing Goddesses. The event will take place from 7 – 10 pm.  It is free, but it is for adults, so attendees should be 18 and older please. Sangria and light bites will be served. 

Saturday, Oct. 5: 

An Evening With Ellington(Culitvate 7twelve)

If you love the smooth tunes of Duke Ellington, you should head over to Cultivate 7twelve tomorrow for “An Evening with Ellington.” The Waco Collective – a loose knit affiliation of Waco Jazz Professionals - is organizing the performance. The show starts at 7:30 and tickets are $15.   

Snapshot: Eastern Little League – Historic Waco Foundation(Historic Waco Foundation) 

Tomorrow morning, the Waco-McLennan County Libraries and the Historic Waco Foundation invite you to join them for “Eastern Little League - A Snapshot.” You’ll learn about the history and significance of youth sports in East Waco from Noah Jackson Jr., one of the League’s founders. The conversation will take place at the East Waco Library on El Avenue from 10:30 AM to noon.  Admission is free. 

Dogtoberfest 2019

Tomorrow from noon to 5 pm is Dogtoberfest! Dogtoberfest is a dog friendly street party on Austin Avenue across from the Hippodrome.  Come on out to enjoy German food, beer, a dog-friendly photo booth, adoptable pets, vendors, and much more.  Admission to the event is FREE, but food and drink tickets are sold separately. Proceeds benefit the Animal Birth Control Clinic's Community Outreach Program. 

The Solar Tour(Waco Friends of Peace)

Tomorrow and Sunday you can learn more about rooftop solar energy for your home or business by participating in the Waco Solar Tour.  Organized by the Waco Friends of Peace and Climate, the solar tour gives you the chance to see solar energy applications in Waco and to ask all the questions you want about this clean, renewable source of energy.  The self-guided tour has five stops including the Urban Reap project at the Mission Waco Jubilee market.    For more information and a list of the stops, google “Waco Solar Tour.” 

Waco Walk to End Alzheimer’s(Alzheimer's Association, Waco)

Besides all the artsy stuff we also have plenty of ways to support some of our wonderful non-profit organizations this week. 

Tomorrow morning is the Waco Walk to End Alzheimers . It will take place at 8:30 AM at Brazos Park East on Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.  Your participation and donations will help raise awareness about Alzheimers and fund research and education.  

Monday, Oct. 7: 

Beginner Oil Painting Series with Melanie Stokes (every Monday in October))(MC Art Supplies) ⟶Mon Oct 7 thru Mon Oct 28

If you are feeling like unleashing the artist within – we’ve got a couple of opportunities for you to hone your own artistic skills. 

MC Art Supplies is starting a month-long series on oil painting for beginners.  They will be meeting every Monday morning in October from 10 – 11:30 AM at MC Art Supplies on Washington Avenue.  The price is $32 a session or $128 for all 4.  Check out the MC Art Supplies Facebook page for more information and the materials list. 

 Still Life Painting in Acrylic with Trisstah Wagstaff (4 sessions)(Art Center of Waco) ⟶Mon Oct 7 thru Mon Oct 28

The Art Center of Waco is also starting a month-long series on Still Life Paining in Acrylic.  They will meet Mondays in October from 6 – 8 PM at Cultivate 7Twelve on Austin Avenue.  The price is $125 for all 4 sessions.  Visit the Art Center of Waco website for more details and the supply list. 

Thursday, Oct. 10:  

2019 Annual Membership Banquet – Centex Hispanic Chamber of Commerce(Centex Hispanic Chamber of Commerce)

Thursday evening  is the Centex Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Banquet.  Mixer and networking starts at 5 with the program at 6. Tickets are $75 for non-members or $65 for members. 

 Livestrong at the YMCA — Dinner (fundraiser)(YMCA of Central Texas) 

Another opportunity on Thursday evening is the YMCA “Livestrong” Dinner.  Enjoy a Chuy's Fajita dinner for $20. All proceeds benefit the LIVESTRONG program for cancer survivors at the YMCA of Central Texas. The dinner will take place from 6 – 8 PM at the YMCA on Harvey Drive. Baylor Homecoming(Baylor Homecoming)  ⟶Thu Oct 10 thru Sat Oct 12

Finally, for all you Baylor Bear fans out there – Baylor Homecoming festivities kick off on Thursday.  You can get all the info on homecoming events on the Baylor website at Baylor.edu/homecoming.

Kateleigh joined KWBU in January 2019. She is an Oklahoma native that is making the move to Waco after working as an All Things Considered host and producer at affiliate KOSU Radio in Oklahoma City. She is a former NPR Next Generation Radio Fellow, a Society of Professional Journalists award winner, an Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame recipient for ‘Outstanding Promise in Journalism’ and the Oklahoma Collegiate Media Association’s 2017 recipient for ‘College Newspaper Journalist of the Year.’ After finishing up her journalism degree early she decided to use her first year out of college to make the transition from print media to public radio. She is very excited to have joined KWBU and she is looking forward to all the opportunities it will bring - including providing quality journalism to all Texans.
