City Seeks Federal Grant to Offset Twin Peaks Expenses

Waco Police Department

This week, the Waco City Council approved the application for a federal grant that would help with costs incurred during the May 17 Twin Peaks shootout.

The city’s Emergency Management department is looking for roughly 249,000 dollars. This money – according the resolution – would go towards reimbursing overtime and rental equipment expenses. Because of the magnitude of the shootout, external law enforcement agencies and resources were needed, which the city says resulted in “significant costs”.

If received, the majority of the requested grant money would go to the police department for overtime hours and equipment. Other recipients would include the Waco Fire department, Waco transit, the city of Woodway public safety department, as well as Robinson’s, Hewitt’s and Lorena’s Police departments.

Officials are also hoping the city will receive an additional grant, through programs run by the Governor’s office. This money would cover the costs of sheltering and feeding the 177 people arrested following the May 17 shootout that left 9 dead.
