As Americans fire up the grills and shoot some fireworks, we need to be mindful about our four-legged friends.
Paula Rivadeneira is the executive director of the Humane Society of Central Texas and says that animals don’t like the noise, and will do just about anything to try to get away from it.
“That’s really what we’re worried about. The animals are going to get afraid, they’re going to escape from the yard, they’re going to hurt themselves somehow, so we want to make sure the animals are all protected.”
She says that intake at the shelter increases a lot on the 5th, 6th and 7th of July. If you find a stray, or somehow lose your animal, Rivendeneira says the first thing you should do is post the lost or found pet on social media.
“Because we know that most animals are found really close to home, so if you can post in the Next Door of that area of where the animal is found it is very likely that you are going to find the owner.”
She’s talking about the Next-Door app and website where members can post things that are specific to a neighborhood.
Rivendeneira says the best thing to do on the fourth is to let your pets inside to avoid the noise, and to get your pet microchipped. The Humane Society of Central Texas is offering free microchipping for pets now through July 3rd and no appointment is necessary.
