Midway ISD Hires New Athletic Director

Midway Independent School District

Last night the Midway Independent School District board of trustees approved Brad Shelton as the new athletic director for the district. KWBU’S Carlos Morales has more.

Come January Brad Shelton will take the helm as Midway ISD’s new athletic director.

Shelton’s been with the district of roughly 7,600 students since 2006 when he was the UIL athletic compliance coordinator.

“While I’ve been out of athletics for, you know, working on my fourth year," Shelton said. "I’ve always stayed, remained connected, working with coaches, working with student-athletes, just trying to be around it because this was a goal of mine to return to Midway athletics in this capacity.”

The district’s current athletic director Randy Weisinger, who’s set to retire in the coming months, will help transition Shelton into the new position.

“We’ll evaluate programs, their effectiveness, see how they’re doing," Shelton said. "My goal at the end of the day is to ensure our student athlete’s are provided excellent opportunities to compete and achieve at the highest level.”

During Weisinger’s 7-year tenure at the district, Midway high school jumped from an enrollment classification of 4A to 6A.

That growth spurred about $20 million dollars in renovating and constructing athletic facilities throughout the district.

Shelton says ensuring the support of all programs will be a come January.

“We really want to increase our attendance at sporting events and kind of get the community involved and student body participating," Shelton said. "We get some good turnout in certain sports but I’d like to see it lifted across the sports in all sports.”
