The music for SHOUT! Black Gospel Music Moments comes from the collection at Baylor University’s Black Gospel Music Restoration Project, the world’s largest initiative to acquire, digitize, scan and catalog America’s fast-vanishing legacy of gospel vinyl. And the in- danger vinyl arrives daily in a variety of ways, including loans from legendary collectors like Chicago’s Bob Marovich.
We receive 45s, LPs, and even cassettes of all gospel artists – from Mahalia Jackson to the so-called vanity disks pressed for a small storefront church on Chicago’s south side. Not surprisingly, that means sometimes we know nothing about the artist – as is the case in this week’s 45, “Get Your Business Fixed” by Emma Weeks and the Faith Temple Radio Choir of COGIC – Church of God in Christ. It was released in 1972 on the eclectic HOB gospel label.
Whoever the big-voice Ms. Weeks is, she has great taste in songs. “Get Your Business Fixed” was written by gospel songwriter Rosie Wallace – who was the only singer to be a member of the Caravans, the Davis Sisters AND the Ward Singers. Weeks sings the heck out of it, too – roaring at the very top of her register to be heard over the Faith Temple Radio Choir. It’s clearly a live recording – and is all the more exciting for that.
