The Write Stuff

I’m CJ Jackson and this is the Business Review.

For many people wanting to write, they simply do not know where to start. Kristen Ethridge, author and director of public relations, shares her expertise on writing and self-publishing.

I know it sounds a little silly, but I think you start where you are, and you put those ideas down on paper, and then you start to learn more about the market. You pair with editors or maybe you're writing nonfiction. Maybe you are in the business world maybe you get a good ghost writer to help you.

The great thing about publishing is there are so many avenues today, there really has never been a better time to be a writer. Kindle is the front runner, Kindle Direct Publishing, but there are other avenues. Barnes & Noble has their own, Nook Press, Kobo Writing Life, and a number of other publishers as well. And there's aggregators like PublishDrive who can get you out to even more niches and international markets.

As far as resources go I think the best one on the market is Mark Dawson's Self Publishing Formula. Mark has a podcast, Self-Publishing Show, you can get that on iTunes and Stitcher. Joanna Penn, The Creative Penn has a wonderful podcast. There's a lot of resources like that out there. So start where you are and then learn, and keep learning and be curious about the industry and the market and what you can do better, and the connections you can make.

The Business Review is a production of Livingston & McKay, and the Hankamer School of Business at Baylor University.

Innovation-lover and director of communications and marketing at the Hankamer School of Business, CJ Jackson is also a public radio show host and Iowa State alum.
