SHOUT! Black Gospel Music Moments - Southeast Inspirational Choir

In 1982, the Southeast Inspirational Choir’s release of “My Liberty” was the break-out song for 21-year-old gospel superstar Yolanda Adams.

Houston’s Southeast Inspirational Choir may be the best mass choir in Texas, with several superb LPs through the years. But it is best known as the place where gospel superstar Yolanda Adams got her start. Adams has since sold 10 million records, won four Grammys, been honored at the White House and probably has an entire room in her house for all of her awards.

But in 1982, she was just 21 -- and one of the sopranos on the Choir’s two-LP set titled 10th Annual Praise and Rededication Concert. But it is her soaring performance on the full-tilt gospel romp, “My Liberty,” that got the attention of the music industry ... and within a couple of years, she was signed to a major label and headlining tours.

Adams is semi-retired today, only occasionally releasing stellar gospel music and performing live. The Southeast Inspirational Choir, however, continues to sing in Houston and beyond, thrilling audiences with its powerhouse sound and a new array of superb soloists and musicians.
