SHOUT! Black Gospel Music Moments - Sterling Glass and the Metropolitan Singers of Waterbury

Sterling Glass and the Metropolitan Singers are best known for their dramatic, 5 ½ minute version of the old spiritual, “Mary, Don’t You Weep.”

Connecticut were rooted in the gospel music of the mid-1970s. Supported by a full band, the group’s sound was closer to the Winans than the Dixie Hummingbirds. They only released three LPs before breaking up.

Today they’re best known for a single track on their album Jesus Never Fail, released in 1973, “Mary, Don’t You Weep.” Their version of the beloved old spiritual is a five and half minute master class in how to stretch out a song for dramatic effect. The key here is the powerful Hammon B3 work by organist Cornelius Dale that will make the hairs on your arm stand up!
