Baylor Equestrian Heads To NCEA Championship

Carlos Morales
A Rider From New Mexico State Heads out to Compete in the "Reigning" category

At the end of March, Baylor Equestrian clinched their first Big 12 Championship since 2010. And now they’re aiming to become National Champions this weekend.

Baylor Equestrian is the number 2 seed heading into the National Championship – a spot that earned them a coveted first-round bye.

The NCEA – that’s the National Collegiate Equestrian Association – holds the championship event because there aren’t enough participating schools to qualify as an NC DOUBLE A championship.

The 12 teams participating are placed in a bracket, where they meet head-to-head. Their score is based off a series of events, which are broken up into two disciplines: Western and Hunt Seat.

“What makes this an athletic competing is all judging and scoring is based on the rider, not on the horse.”

That’s Nancy Post – Baylor’s associate athletic director. She says there are three final winners - an overall champion and winners in the Western and Hunt Seat category.

This is the 9th straight year that the NCEA has held its championship tournament in Waco and would be Baylor’s first championship title since they won the Hunt seat in 2012.
