Act Locally Waco - Events April 5 - 11

In this week's episode of Act Locally Waco, host Ashley Thornton brings us several arts events this week - including Gobsmacked from the Out on A Limb Dance Company. Thornton also highlights some family-friendly events to enjoy the outdoors like the Airshow at Texas State Technical College. 

 

Arts Events:

Engrained

Tonight, April 5, is First Friday in downtown Waco. So while you are taking advantage of the regular First Friday specials and treats downtown, be sure to stop by Cultivate 7twelve at 712 Austin Avenue.  The have a new exhibit opening called “Engrained,” which features over 30 pieces of work crafted by Waco’s most talented woodworkers. A reception including live music and light bites will be from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. 

Heavenly Voices Gospel Choir

Tomorrow night, April 6, Baylor’s Heavenly Voices Gospel Choir will be celebrating 30 years of ministry with a Gospel Fest concert at the Hippodrome. Tickets are $12 and the show starts at 7 p.m. 

Gobsmacked

Also on April 6, Waco’s own modern dance company – Out on a Limb – presents it’s first full evening-length dance work “Gobsmacked: An evening of Dance and Music With Food and Wine.” The show is a mysterious journey into a multisensory experience features fantastical costumes, live music, dinner and dessert bites from fourteen local chefs and bakers. Tickets are $40.  The show starts at 5 p.m. at the Waco Civic Theatre on Lake Air Drive. 

Cisneros

On Thursday, April 11, Sandra Cisneros, poet, short story writer, novelist, essayist, performer, and artist whose work explores the lives of the working-class will be speaking at Baylor.  You may remember her classic novel, The House On Mango Street, which sold over 6 million copies. Her presentation will be at 6 p.m. at Powell Chapel which is inside Truett Seminary on the Baylor campus. 

Winkler

Also on Thursday night, the Waco Symphony Orchestra presents Peter and the Wolf  narrated by well known and loved television star – Henry Winkler.  Tickets range from $40 to $70.  The performance begins at 7:30 in Waco Hall on Baylor campus.  You are also welcome to arrive early and join Mark Whitney at 6:45 p.m. in Roxy Grove Hall for a pre-concert talk. 

Fundraisers in Waco:

Bunny Brunch 

The “Bunny Brunch” will take place tomorrow, April 6,  at Ridgewood Country club.  You are invited to wear your Easter bonnet and bring the whole family.  There will be plenty of activities including pictures with Bonnie Bunny and a style show for kids and adults.  Tickets are $30 and the fun starts at 11 a.m.  This is a fundraiser for VOICE, a local organization that works to empower children and families to lead healthy and productive lives. 

Kayak 

On Sunday, April 7, at 1 p.m. head out to McLane Stadium to cheer on the paddlers in Kayak for a Cause. Spectators are welcome, free of charge, to cheer on the competitors from the South Plaza and enjoy the music, food trucks and ice cold beverages for sale during and after the race. This is a fund raiser for the Boys & Girls Club.

Airshow

The Heart of Texas Airshow takes place at the Texas State Technical College (TSTC) airport Saturday and Sunday. The U.S. Air Force THUNDERBIRDS will perform as well as the Black Daggers Parachute Team, wing walkers and much more.  Check HeartOfTexasAirshow.com for all the details including schedules and various ticket options. Gates are open from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. on both days.  Tickets are available online – it’s cash only if you decide to pay at the gate. 

Coco

On Thursday, April 11,  the Community Race Relations Coalition and the Cen-Tex Hispanic Chamber of Commerce are co-hosting dinner and movie.   The movie will be Disney's Coco –  the tale of Miguel -- an aspiring young musician who takes a trip to the magical land of his ancestors and uncovers the mysteries behind his family’s stories and traditions.  The movie and dinner are free with donations gratefully accepted, but you MUST reserve your space.  Visit the Community Race Relations Coalitionwebsite for the number to call to make your reservation.  Dinner and movie start at 5:30 at the Centex Hispanic Chamber of Commerce building at 915 LaSalle. 

'National Public Health Week' Events:

Healthy Soul Food 

The Waco Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is hosting a healthy soul food cooking demonstration and health fair tomorrow, April 6. You can join them for some fun group exercises, free health screenings, giveaways and delicious recipes and tasty cooking tips. The event takes place from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the City of Waco Multipurpose Center on Paul Quinn Campus on Elm Avenue.  It is free and open to the public.
