From MLK Day activities to the Brazos River Clean Up, there is plenty to do in Waco this week.  

MLK Activities

Friday, Jan 17 - Wreath-laying Ceremony, MLK Park (Corner of Elm Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.)

Today at noon is the annual wreath-laying ceremony at MLK Park.  Organizations from all around town remember Dr. King by bringing wreaths to place at the park, and inspiring speakers remind us that it is our responsibility to carry on his legacy.  MLK park is located at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and Elm Avenue.

Fri Jan 17  - Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Spaghetti Lunch(Waco NAACP)

Also at lunchtime today, Waco’s NAACP chapter is hosting its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Spaghetti lunch at Carver Park Baptist Church on Herring.  You can support the work of the NAACP by purchasing a $5 spaghetti lunch. You can also purchase plates for the elderly and disabled, NAACP members will deliver lunches to shut ins.

On Monday morning you can join the Doris Miller Family YMCA for their MLK day leadership breakfast.  The speaker will be Pastor Ron English, of Greater Bosqueville Baptist Church.   This event starts at 7 AM and it  is free and open to the public!  The Doris Miller YMCA is on Elm Avenue inside the historic Paul Quinn campus.

Monday, Jan 20 -  24th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Peace March(Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. & Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.) Edit

After breakfast you can join the The Zeta Phi Beta sorority and Phi Beta Sigma fraternity for the 24th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Peace March.  It starts at 9 a.m. on the Indian Spring Park end of the suspension bridge. Peace March activities include a free lunch and entertainment. They will also be announcing the winners of the Bledsoe Miller Essay and Poster Contest.  

Monday, Jan 20 - MLK DAY of Service: Brazos River Cleanup - https://www.facebook.com/events/576185122925038/

MLK day has been set aside for a day of service and there are several opportunities to serve in Waco. Keep Waco Beautiful and Waco Paddle Company are hosting their annual MLK Day Brazos River Cleanup. They will have a registration table across from the Waco Paddle Company Rental truck at the Corner of University Parks and Franklin. All materials will be provided by Keep Waco Beautiful. Dress appropriately for the weather and please bring a REUSABLE WATER BOTTLE!! Kayaks are available on a 1st come/ 1st serve basis! Visit the Keep Waco Beautiful website to register ahead and reserve your shirt size. The clean up will take place between 11 AM and 2 PM.

From 10: 30 to 3:30 on Monday, Mission Waco is hosting their annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration. The event will include speakers, creative performances, lunch and a panel discussion about racial reconciliation. The event is free and everyone is welcome.

Monday, Jan 20- Candlelight Vigil, MLK Park (Suspension bridge, East Waco side). 5:30 PM - gathering. 6 PM - program. Chairs available. Bring Candles. For information contact Coque Gibson, 254-722-1274.

Finally, Monday evening is the Candlelight Vigil on the East Waco end of the Suspension bridge.  The group will gather at 5:30 and the program will begin at 6 PM. Please bring candles.  Chairs will be available on a first come, first served basis.

Wed Jan 22  - Step Up & Scale Down(Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service) Edit

Was your New Years Resolution to get healthy this year? If so, have we got a deal for you! The Texas A&M Agrilife extension office is offering a 12-week program to help us all get moving and move toward a healthy weight. It’s called “Step up & Scale down and it kicks off on Wednesday.  Classes will be from noon to 1 PM at the Agrilife office on Cobbs. The cost for the 12-weeks is $35. Call the agrilife office for more information or to register.

Thu Jan 23  - Speakeasy Fundraiser(Historic Waco Foundation) Edit

January 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of Prohibition in the U.S. Join the Historic Waco Foundation for a Speakeasy Fundraiser to start the new year off with a bang on Thursday, January 23rd. Guests will learn to make three classic prohibition cocktails, along with the drinks, you will also enjoy a 3-course meal of heavy hors d'oeuvres. Tickets for the Speakeasy start at $125.  The event is Thursday, but today is the last day to make a reservation, so call the Historic Waco Foundation today and tell them to save you a seat!

Thu Jan 23  - Night of Excellence(TCA & TSTC) Edit

The TSTC Culinary Arts program is hosting a Night of Excellence on Thursday at 6:00 pm. This Once in a Lifetime Dinner will feature TSTC’s Chefs of the Year and World Competitors from the Heart of Texas Culinary Association Chapter. This showcase of Culinary Talent and Flavors will be a fundraiser for the TSTC Student Club and Instructor Competitions for 2020. Tickets are $65 per person or $100 per couple and it will be BYFW (Bring Your Favorite Wine). To reserve your seating contact Mark R. Schneider or Michele Brown at TSTC.
