The Texas State Fire Marshal’s Office says the deaths of 12 people responding to last year’s explosion at the West Fertilizer plant could have been prevented.

The Fire Marshal’s report [PDF] released Thursday night says the first responders killed in the April 2013 fertilizer plant explosion in West,Texas  were not prepared or equipped to deal with such a dangerous situation.

The report says that is not because the first responders failed to perform their duties as they had been trained, but due to a “systemic deficiency in the training and preparation” of the firefighters.

Monday’s storm caused problems at Waco’s three water treatment plants. Some instruments failed at the City’s riverside plant and Mt. Carmel plant. The city’s main water treatment plant, which built to was And the ozonation system at the city’s main water treatment plant also temporarily went offline due to a lightning strike. Ozonation is a disinfection process.

"What we lost was the ozonation part for last night and this morning and it has since been fixed and is back online," said Jonathan Echols with Waco Water.

Waco High School Principal Resigns

The principal of Waco High School announced to his staff late last week that he’s resigning. Sam Sexton took the job last June--he was the fourth principal of the school since 2008. Waco ISD officials say they’re looking internally to fill the spot, but can’t confirm if anyone has been selected yet. A new administrator could be selected as soon as May 22nd.

Sexton previously served as the principal for La Vega High School’s for six years.

Kids under 18 can't buy cigarettes in the U.S., but they can legally work in tobacco fields when they're as young as 12.

One of those kids is Eddie Ramirez, 15, who works the fields in the summer.

"It just sticks to my hand," he says of the plant. "It's really sticky, you know, and really yellow." It's nearly impossible to wash off, he says.

Today, the state of Texas is scheduled to execute 41-year old Robert James Campbell for the murder and rape of a 20-year old woman in 1991.

If carried out, Campbell will be the first prisoner killed by capital punishment in the U.S. since a botched execution occurred in Oklahoma two weeks ago. However, Campbell’s defense team is still trying to appeal his deal using two very distinct arguments.

Attempts to lure the makers of Sriracha to Texas aren’t going unnoticed – although this latest round of attention may not be what the popular hot sauce is after.

Yesterday, a bipartisan group of Texas politicians, business people and agricultural representatives visited Huy Fong Foods in Irwindale, California – the company that makes Sriracha sauce.

The company is staying in California for now, despite complaints from neighbors. But it may open a second plant in the Lone Star State.
