It's been 100 years since the lynching of Jesse Washington, an event so gruesome it’s known as the “Waco Horror”. Thousands from the community and neighboring cities came to Waco to witness and some partake in the lynching of the 17-year-old farmhand who was accused of raping and killing his boss’ wife. The events that followed Washington’s trial have cast a proverbial shadow over Waco. In this episode of Behind the Story, in collaboration with the Baylor University Institute for Oral History, KWBU presents a 3-part series that looks back at how the lynching of Jesse Washington forever changed the city.
