Braids and Baylor

Social Media makes it possible to see the work of a hair stylist before you sit in the salon chair. Cole Gee tells us how important those online connections are for black college students moving into a new community.

For many black students moving to college, maintaining their hair can be a major difficulty.

However, thanks to social media and the internet. Black Baylor students are now finding support one braid at a time.

Brooklyn Simone, a junior at Baylor University first decided to braid hair as a favor to a friend in a class group chat. Little did she know this would become a major side hustle.

Her love of braids isn't her only focus, however, she's at school for her degree and military career first.

"I would say being a college student, make sure you're always prioritizing your studies. At the end of the day, that's what we're all here for. Don't let the money blindsides you have that degree."

Group chats aren't the only way Baylor Students are finding braiders.

Instagram and Snapchat have all become hubs for black students to find barbers and braiders throughout Waco.
