How Local News is Delivered

Jerry Larson (Waco Tribune Herald)

Today the words “like, comment, share” are a common part of the conversation about what information is online. When it comes to getting news stories, the number of people who people stories through social media, instead of the newspaper at the front door, is increasing.

At the Waco Tribune-Herald the goal is still to do important stories, but these days way more people see those stories first on Facebook.

Ken Sury, Waco Today Editor, a part of the Waco Tribune-Herald, said acting faster and getting the major stories out on social media first, has become a part of the routine.

“I would say if anything is had to make us maybe a little more reactive and well, even proactive to that, to that end,” Sury said.

So now, instead of people rushing to the newspaper stands for major stories, they are running to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

“You know, for a while there, we were really cognizant of trying to get page views or originally called clicks when we, you know, and that's still an aspect of it. I mean, we still like we actually track what's being looked at online,” Sury said.

The newsroom has a mounted screen that tracks the most-read stories of the day so reporters and editors can know what stories are clicked on the most.
