Sixth Annual Climate Crisis Art Exhibit Shows Creative Solutions

Art Center Waco is hosting the sixth annual Climate Crisis Art Exhibit, put together by the Waco Friends of The Climate, to try to start new conversations around climate change.

Dr. Alan Northcutt, curator of the exhibit and director of Waco Friends of The Climate, says this exhibit is important because it allows people to talk about solutions to the climate crisis in a fun and creative way.

“We’re focused on-on solutions and and making this beyond you know education and maybe inspiration from seeing some of these art works, to solutions and encouraging people and providing information to people so that they can act and uh you know contribute to the solution.”

The showcase is being held to raise awareness for the severity of the climate change crisis, and to try and talk about solutions in a creative way.

The gallery will include artwork from people of all ages and artistic backgrounds. There were no restrictions based on age or experience levels. A variety of mediums are allowed in the showcase; however, the exhibit is designed for art to be hung on walls. Small sculptures were also permitted.

On April 21 a reception for the exhibit will be held from 5-7 p.m. Judging for the showcase will be separated into categories based on age, with their being separate categories for submissions from people in middle school, high school, college, and adults. The winners of the separate categories will be announced at that time.

Art Center Waco is open Tuesday through Friday 11 a.m.-5 p.m., and on Saturdays from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. The Climate Crisis Art Exhibit will be on display through April 29.

The Waco Friends of The Climate is a nonprofit group founded in Waco in 2002, and in 2019 the group successfully created a Styrofoam recycling program in Waco that was later adopted by the city. The exhibit is made from only artworks made by Texan residents, with the majority of submissions being from Waco, Texas.
