Every NFL season, each team nominates one player for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award. In addition to being great football players, each of the nominees demonstrates a dedication to community service.
Although he plays in Chicago, one nominee has his roots firmly planted in Waco.
Andrew Billings graduated from Waco High School before playing football at Baylor University. He’s been in the NFL for 7 years, playing with the Chicago Bears since 2023.
Of the nomination, Billings said "it’s nice to be recognized for what you do, but it’s nice to put your community out there too."
Since joining the NFL, Billings founded the Billings Family Find-a-way-Foundation. Through his foundation, he donates bikes and books to elementary schools, sponsors a free summer football camp and provides teacher grants. He also helps fund a mentorship program and powerlifting meet.
Waco ISD Director of Athletics Ed Love works closely with Billings on his summer camp and mentor program. He describes Billings as a gentle giant because of his heart for the Waco community.
"He's always asking, ‘hey, coach, is there anything else y’all need? Anything else I can do?’," Love said.
Love said in his 40 years in education, he has never seen someone be as involved as Billings.
"I mean you talk about giving back to the community, he is taking it to another level," he said. "You talk about man of the year, he’s man of Waco."
This year’s Walter Payton Man of the Year winner will be announced on FOX during the NFL Honors ceremony on February 9 at 8pm central. The winner will receive a $265,000 donation to the charity of their choice. If he wins, Billings says he would put the money right back into the Waco community.
"I think the money they give us, I'll try to put it back in my foundation and that money’s going to definitely help me continue this long after I retire," Billings said.
The Walter Payton Man of the Year award is open for public vote until January 6.
