Shortly after the ribbon cutting for the Doris Miller Community Pool, a small group of kids take turns making cannon-balls in the newly opened pool.

The pool sits just behind the Doris Miller Community Center, which was previously a YMCA facility. The city took over the facility in 2021, performing renovations before reopening it as the Community Center in 2023.

"We hadn’t had a pool in this community in over 20 years, so we are excited to offer up opportunities to learn how to swim, to learn how to be safe in water," Council Member Andrea Barefield said.

She said the idea for this pool came out of conversations with the her district members.

"We had a tremendous outcry of out community members – there’s nowhere for us to swim that isn’t private or doesn’t require membership," Barefield said. "And we had an opportunity to solve that."

The pool is housed indoors and plans to be open year-round. Swim lessons and aerobic exercise classes will begin in February.

Open swim is $3/day, and classes can be purchased on a one-time or monthly basis. You can find more information about hours and fees here.

Molly-Jo, or MJ as her friends know her, joined KWBU in 2024 as the station's Multimedia Reporter. Originally from San Antonio, Tx, she grew up on local TV journalism and knew that when she decided to pursue journalism as a career, she wanted to find a local beat. Molly-Jo graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in May 2024 with a Bachelor's in Journalism. While there she served as the Audio Editor for UT's student paper, The Daily Texan, and worked with The Drag Audio. She also interned for The Texas Standard, where her feature on a San Antonio nonprofit earned her a statewide award for health reporting (and becoming the first intern to do so). When she is not scoping out stories, MJ enjoys reading a good book, hiking or learning new crafts.
