KWBU-Waco Public Radio Funding Gap

At the end of February 2025, we were informed that Baylor University will no longer provide monetary support, an annual cut of $209,461. This unexpected funding gap must be made up in the coming year with commitments for annual support for the station to continue to serve our community. We have set a goal of 1,500 additional sustaining members, over and above the current 700+ supporters (out of 15 thousand weekly listeners). Your sustaining gift is vital to the long-term survival of Waco’s NPR service.

Give now. Click on the green donate button at the top of this page.

Clare Paul, KWBU-FM Member and former KWBU-TV Manager, makes an appeal to our community.

"When I heard about the funding cuts at KWBU it hit me….hard.

Hello. I’m Clare Paul.

I was once part of KWBU. Back when we had both this NPR station and a local public television station.

In May of 2010, we lost the TV station.

I’m telling you this from firsthand experience—without substantial growth in community support, the fate of Waco Public RADIO is in jeopardy.

Just like with the TV station, people assumed we’d always be here. You’ve probably heard that the newest gap in funding is from more than $200,000 Baylor has reallocated. That is an annual hit our Public Radio Station is going to bare.

Please—don’t let the same thing happen to one of the only local radio stations we have.

KWBU’s future depends on this community.

And I know it sounds cheesy, but it’s true—the most important part of KWBU is the U. Y-O-U.

Give today at KWBU.org.

Baylor provided the following statement:

“KWBU is a community public radio station serving the Greater Waco area. Like other KWBU supporters, Baylor University does not direct KWBU’s programming, content or news coverage. As Baylor aims to be good stewards of students’ tuition dollars, we are reducing the direct financial subsidy and underwriting the University provides to the station as part of a campuswide strategic budget reallocation process. We are hopeful the community will step up and support KWBU at the level Baylor has for many years.”

Brodie has been with KWBU since June 5, 2000. She knows the exact date because it was less than one month before KWBU began broadcasting NPR programming. Her commercial radio experience coupled with many years in public broadcasting, have given her a good foundation for heading up the on-air side of KWBU's operations. Brodie was raised in a military family; her father's Army stations ranged from Minnesota to Germany, Washington, Nebraska and California. But it is TEXAS she calls home! Brodie has two canine companions and loves being the aunt to 5 nieces and 4 nephews. She also enjoys playing dominos and a variety of card and board games. Brodie_Bashaw@Baylor.edu 254-710-3695
