KWBU Public Radio joins colleagues across the public media system in responding to yesterday’s federal court ruling overturning the Executive Order rescinding federal funds for PBS and NPR partners and public media entities. The ruling reaffirms that decisions regarding public broadcasting cannot be politically driven or used to silence journalists, setting a precedent for the protection of First Amendment rights throughout the public information and media sectors.
While the decision safeguards the constitutional independence of public media, it does not include the restoration or increase of federal funding. As a result, KWBU and stations like ours continue to rely heavily on the commitment and generosity of community members, local businesses, and philanthropic organizations to sustain meaningful programming and trusted journalism.
“Public media has always existed to serve the public interest: providing context, credibility, and connection,” said Lydia Tate, KWBU’s CEO. “This ruling strengthens our ability to do that work freely, but our ability to thrive still depends on the continued support of our listeners and donors.”
