Act Locally Waco - Events April 12 - 18

This week on Act Locally Waco, host Ashley Thornton reminds us of the upcoming Tax Day deadline as well as devoting the episode to a list of free events in Waco, including Brazos Nights and Art on Elm.  

Last Chance Tax Day 

Tomorrow, April 13, is your last chance to get free help preparing your taxes from the University High School Tax program.  They will be available at University High from 9 -1 p.m. to provide help. University High School is located at 3201 South New Road. 

Brazos Nights

Tonight, April 12, is one of the most fun, free Waco events of the year --- Brazos Nights.  Join your neighbors for a concert at Indian Spring Park in the shadow of the Suspension Bridge.  This year’s performers are award-winning soul and blues artists Booker T. Jones and Cedric Burnside. Gates open at 6:30 p.m.  Cedric Burnside comes on at 7:30 p.m. and Booker T. Jones Starts at 9 p.m. Chairs, blankets and coolers are permitted. 

Egg Hunts 

If there is no rain tomorrow we have all kinds of free stuff for families to enjoy. All three community centers are hosting free Easter egg hunts and other Easter festivities.  Dewey on 9thStreet and South Waco on Speight both kick off at 11 a.m. - and Bledsoe Miller on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.  kicks off at noon. 

Art on Elm

Tomorrow, April 13, is also Art on Elm. The organizers shut down Elm Avenue from Dallas to Sherman Street and put up a street fair.  The center piece is a juried art exhibit that showcases some of our local artists. You can visit, stroll up and down Elm and enjoy more art, musicians, craft and food vendors and all kinds of kids’ activities.  It starts at 10 a.m. and lasts until 5 p.m. 

Green and Gold 

This weekend is Green and Gold Weekend at Baylor, which means all kinds of free Baylor sports for you to enjoy.  The Spring Green and Gold game kicks off at noon and all tickets are free.  At 2:00 p.m.  Baylor Softball takes on Texas Tech – the first 400 fans get in free.  Then at 3:00 p.m. Baylor Baseball takes on Oklahoma – the first 1,000 fans get in free.  They will start handing out the tickets to the softball and baseball games at 1:00 p.m. so you can head on over a little early and make sure you get one of the free ones. 

Porch Tales 

The Heart of Texas Story Tellers Guild is hosting their first ever “Porch Tales” Spring Story Telling event on April 13. The featured story teller will be Consuelo Samarripa from Harker Heights. The event will include hot dogs, lemonade and an afternoon of shared storytelling from guild members and other Waco neighbors. Join the fun from 2 – 4 p.m. at the Good Neighbor House at the corner of 23rdand Colcord in the beautiful Sanger Heights neighborhood. 

Brazos River CleanUp 

If you want to get out on the river and do some good for your community tomorrow morning, you can participate in the Brazos River CleanUp. Keep Waco Beautiful is partnering with Waco Paddle Company to host the event. Registration will take place at 200 S. University Parks Drive – that’s basically the corner of University Parks and Franklin, you can get there as early as 10:30. The clean-up will take place from 11-3 p.m.  Cleaning materials, t-shirts and water coolers will be provided, but please bring a reusable water bottle. 

Art Talk 

On Thursday, April 18, the Art Center of Waco invites you to an artist talk featuring distinguished photographers Michael Larsen and Tracey Talbert as they share the story of their journey as artists. Husband and wife team Larsen & Talbert met in high school.  Now they specialize in celebrity portraits and their work has appeared in a wide variety of magazines like SELF, Esquire and InStyle. They currently have several photographs on view in Cultivate 7Twelve's “The Art of Celebrity and Modern Brand Making: Pop” exhibition. The talk will take place at 6 p.m. at the American Bank Downtown Branch at 325 Franklin Avenue.  It is free and open to the public. 

Poetry and Authors 

Also on Thursday, local non-profit Global Revive and the Cultivate 7Twelve’s art gallery are hosting “Poetry and Authors.” You will get to meet local authors and get a chance to hear about their books. There will also be open mic poetry, spoken word and light refreshments.   Poetry and authors will kick off at 6:30 p.m. at Cultivate 7Twelve on Austin Avenue. 

ReStore Halfprice Sale 

This isn’t technically free – but it could save you a bunch of money.  The Habitat for Humanity ReStore is having it’s biannual half-price sale tomorrow.  Brick Pallets and everything in the entire store except for flooring will be half price. The sale takes place tomorrow from 9 -3 p.m. at the Habitat Restore which is located at 1224 Franklin Avenue. Proceeds help fund the work of Habitat for Humanity Waco.
