Act Locally Waco - Events April 26 - May 2

This week on Act Locally Waco, host Ashley Thornton is bringing us events for Children's Book Week and other events to take the kids to,  as well as several fundraisers to support. 

Celebrate Children’s Book Week 

Dia de los Ninos/Dia de los Libros(Waco Hispanic Museum )

Tomorrow, April 27, the Waco Hispanic Museum is hosting Dia de los Ninos y Dia de los libros . The free event will include music and dance and a book hand out celebrating children and reading and the future of our community. Dia de los ninos will take place from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.  at the Waco Hispanic Museum,  located inside the South Waco Community Center at 2815 Speight. 

STARS Book Clubs Annual Gala 

On Monday, April 29, you are invited to the STARS Book Club's Annual Gala. STARS Book Clubs matches volunteers from local churches with children at various elementary schools in Waco for lunchtime reading practice. In the last year, this effort has grown to include more than 600 volunteers serving more than 1,400 students weekly.  The funds raised at the gala will help with administrative costs, books and materials for next school year. The event will take place at the Waco Convention Center and will include a silent auction, seated dinner, and powerful stories.  Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. with dinner and presentation beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets are $45. 

Children’s Book Week: Book Carnival(West Waco Library) ; Fri – Children’s Book Week: Rainbow Fish

The Waco McLennan County Libraries will also be celebrating Children’s Book Week.  The West Waco library on Bosque is hosting a Book Carnival from 4-5 on Wednesday, May 1,  and The South Waco Library on 18th Street is hosting a Rainbow Fish event from 4 – 5 next Friday, May 3, complete with fishy, crunchy snacks and lots of glitter! 

Waco ISD Pre-K Round Up

Tomorrow, April 27,  is the Waco ISD Pre-K Registration Round Up and Fun Fest. If you have a child who is turning 4-years-old as of September 1, 2019 and you live in Waco ISD, this will be a terrific, informative and fun event for you and your family.  You can learn about Pre-K in Waco. Find out if you qualify for free Pre-K and register eligible children.  There will also be free hot dogs, family games, a jumbo slide and all kinds of activities. The event will take place from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the North Waco Annex, located at 2015 Alexander Avenue.  Be sure to bring all the documentation you need for registration.  The list of documentation needed is available at Wacoisd.org/prek.

Texas State Technical College Families Day

If you have older kids, you may be starting to think what happens after high school.  If that is the case, be sure to check out Texas State Technical College Families Day tomorrow, April 27.  Visitors can tour programs and talk to campus representatives about the admissions process, financial aid, housing and other topics. Instructors will be on hand to talk to visitors about technical programs. The event will take place from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m on the TSTC campus. Free Microchip Event(Animal Birth Control Clinic)

From 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. tomorrow, April 27, the Animal Birth Control Clinic will be providing free microchips for cats or dogs from McLennan County and the surrounding counties. The event will take place at Orscheln Farm & Home, which is located at the intersection of southbound I-35 and Valley Mills. All dogs must be on a leash and cats in carriers. Please bring a water bill or other address verification with an ID.
 

Community Youth Forum( Waco Parks and Recreation)

On Tuesday, Area teens are invited to join their student peers for an engaging and informative community youth forum, hosted by the Waco Youth Council. Forum attendees will have the opportunity to share ideas and explore topics of particular interest to young people.  This includes the academic transition to high school and college, AP classes, financial aid and many others. The free event will take place from 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Dewey Community Center, on North 9th Street. 

Fundraising Events

Springtime is the time for fundraisers in Waco and many of our wonderful non-profits are holding various events this week to give you an opportunity to have some fun while doing some good…we have a couple for you today to give you the idea, but please check the calendar at actlocallywaco.org for many more! 

KWBU Spring Membership Event - Yes, the short spring fundraising begins Thursday.  When you giveto KWBU you're helping this NPR Station provide you with quality national programs from Morning Edition and All Things Considered to the TED Radio Hour, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me and Fresh Air.  In addition we can continue to bring you local  features including Act Locally Waco, David and Art, Downtown Depot, Conversations with Creative Waco, Likely Stories and more  Join today.Spring Membership Event for NPR in Waco and the Heart of Texas - KWBU begins May 2nd.

Wine, Divas, and Dessert 2019(Waco Cultural Arts Fest and Waco Civic Theatre) 

Tonight, April 26, you are invited to join the Waco Cultural Arts Fest organization for “Wine, Divas and Dessert 2019.” They promise some groovy performances from your fave Diva Troupe. They are reopening the doors to Studio 254 so that you can boogie down with your bad self. The event takes place at 7:30 p.m.  at the Waco Civic Theatre on Lake Air Drive. Tables for 2 are $100.  And if you miss it tonight, they are going to do it all over again tomorrow night, same time, same place. 

Picnic in the Park- Beautification Fundraiser(Keep Waco Beautiful, Inc.)
Sat Apr 27 thru Sat Apr 27 

Tomorrow evening, April 27,  break out the baskets and blankets for Picnic in the Park.  Hosted by Keep Waco Beautiful, proceeds from this event will help revitalize one of Waco’s treasures – Miss Nellie’s Pretty Place in Cameron Park.

You can help and have a good time while doing it. The picnic will take place at the Cameron Park Club house from 6:00-9:00 pm.  The music and food are all lined up for a festive night, bring your blankets to relax under the stars. Adult tickets are $25 with special rates for kids and families. 

Theatre/Arts Events:

Theatre: Jesus Christ Superstar(Mission Waco Jubilee Theatre) 

Finally, for those of you who did not get your “Jesus Christ Superstar” fix this Easter, it’s not too late. Mission Waco’s Jubilee Theatre kicks of their production of iconic 1970 rock opera tonight. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and will take place at the Jubilee Theatre located in North Waco near the corner of Colcord and 15th.   Tickets are $12 with special rates for seniors, students and kids.  Additional performances will take place tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
