Business Review - The Way Forward

Author and speaker, Tom Corley, talks about how to get back on your feet after losing a job.

Losing a job can make you feel lost and out of control. Tom Corley, author and speaker, suggests that you begin networking within your community to forge power relationships to help you bounce back.

“One of the things that I talk a lot about in my research is about building these power relationships. These are relationships that are door openers, they're influencers. You can find them on the boards of nonprofits. You can join a local community-based nonprofit. You're going to meet quite a few people on the board who are the most successful people in the community. That gives you the ability to build relationships with these successful people and they can become door openers for you. You have to tap relationships that you have with important people, which is why it's so important to develop those relationships in the first place. If you haven't done that, you're not going to be able to pick the phone up and ask someone for help. The hello call, happy birthday call, life event call. These are important things you need to do... Daily habits that you need to forge so that you can build these powerful relationships, and these relationships come to the rescue during times of adversity.”

Corley points out that expressing gratitude can keep you positive, while reading about the adversity of successful people can provide you with motivation.

“Start reading books about successful people that are in your industry, maybe biographies. Read these books and learn from the best, what they do to succeed and overcome adversity. What kind of relationships did they build? Who did they build the relationships with?”
