The TEA released accountability ratings for Texas schools today. KWBU’s Jill Ament tells us how Waco ISD schools fared.
The Texas Education Agency released its accountability ratings school districts across the state for 2014. Waco ISD Met Standards overall…but 10 out 22 of the district’s schools didn’t meet standards in at least one of the four index categories.
Overall 90-percent of Texas schools and charter schools received Met Standards ratings.
“Texans should be pleased to see the vast majority of districts, charters, and campuses are meeting the standards set in the second year of the state accountability system,” said Commissioner of Education Michael Williams in statement from TEA.
“While the 2014 numbers are strong, the work continues in districts across our state to meet and exceed increasing state standards and the expectations of their local communities.”
Schools receive one of three ratings under the TEA’s accountability measures: Met Standard, Met Alternative Standard; or Improvement Required.
These ratings are mainly based off of STAAR test results. TEA rates schools in four categories: Student Achievement, Student Progress, Closing Performance Gaps and Post-Secondary Readiness.
Student achievement is a look at a student’s performance across all subject areas and student progress measures year-to-year progress by subject and student group.
Closing performance gaps tracks the academic achievement of economically disadvantaged students and lowest performing racial and ethnic groups. And post-secondary readiness tracks how well a student is prepared for success after high school.
The ten Waco ISD schools that received Improvement Required ratings include three middle schools and seven elementary schools:
Alta Vista - Did not meet standards on Post-Secondary Readiness
Brook Avenue – Did not meet standards on Student Achievement, Closing Performance Gaps and Post-Secondary Readiness
Cedar Ridge – Did not meet standards on Student Achievement and Closing Performance Gaps
Caesar Chavez MS – Did not meet standards on Student Progress, Closing Performance Gaps and Post-Secondary readiness
GW Carver MS – Did not meet standards on Student Progress, Closing Performance Gaps and Post-Secondary Readiness
Hillcrest Magnet – Did not meet standards on Student Progress
Indian Spring MS – Did not meet standards on Student Achievement, Closing Performance Gaps and Post-Secondary Readiness
JH Hines – Did not meet standards on Student Achievement, Closing Performance Gaps and Post-Secondary Readiness
Lake Air Montessori – Did not meet standards on Student Progress
South Waco – Did not meet standards in all index categories.
Waco ISD met the accountability standards last year as well. The district failed to make the grade in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
