Officials are investigating a school shooting in Italy, Texas after a student opened fire Monday morning in the school’s cafeteria.
The shooter -- a male student at Italy High School -- shot a female student several times with a semi automatic handgun. Immediately after shots were fired, an Italy ISD school official confronted the shooter who fled the cafeteria. He was apprehended shortly after.
The victim was airlifted to Parkland Hospital in Dallas. Italy ISD Superintendent Lee Joffre praised his staff. “I want to express to you that our staff acted as trained and addressed the situation in the best way they could.” Joffre said.
Many details about the incident are still unknown. No statement has been released on the relationship between the students or the motive for the shooting. Multiple police and fire departments have joined together on the investigation, including the ATF.
