This week on Act Locally Waco, Ashley Thornton brings you fun events around town for May the Fourth, or Star Wars day, as well as Cinco De Mayo. 

Events in Waco: 

Lemonade Day 

Lemonade Day – Waco(Lemonade Day Waco & Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce ) 

Tomorrow, May 4, is Lemonade Day. For those of you who are not yet familiar with Lemonade Day,  it is program that encourages kids to become entrepreneurs by creating their very own small business: a lemonade stand.  Kids who participate in the program study lessons on how to set up a business and put their learning to work by setting up a Lemonade Stand.  This year we are thrilled to have well over 100 kids participating in Waco. Hopefully you will run across one or more of these stands as you are out and about tomorrow. If you do, please stop and patronize one or more of our budding entrepreneurs.  

May the 4th Be With You

Explore Science: Earth and Space(Challenger Learning Center at TSTC in Waco and TSTC in Waco)

You can start your day tomorrow, May 4, with some actual space science. The Challenger Learning Center at TSTC is offering a free community event called “Explore Science: Earth and Space”  for students of all ages to explore STEM experiments and demonstrations relating to Earth and space. They will even be showing a movie in a pop-up planetarium. Join your fellow scientists and space enthusiasts from 9 a.m. to noon at the Student Recreation Center on TSTC campus. 

KidZoobilee (Cameron Park Zoo) 

Also tomorrow evening, May 4, Cameron Park Zoo is joining in the celebration with a Star Wars themed KidZoobilee.  Come on out to the zoo to join in the fun. In addition to seeing your favorite animals, your kids can enjoy an inflatable zip line, bouncy houses, face-pointing, a train around the zoo and much more… food vendors will be available. The party starts at 5:00pm and goes until 8:00pm. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets are $20 per person for ages 3 and up. 

Roller Derby – May the 4th Be With You!(Skate Country Waco)

Tomorrow night, May 4, Skate Country in Bellmead is hosting “Roller Derby – May the 4th be with you.”   This will be a family-friendly action-packed event featuring the Texas Roller Girls vs. Dallas Derby Devils.  Tickets are $10. Bring your own chair and be sure to bring an extra $5 if you want to play laser tag.  Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the roller derby starts at 7 pm – 11 pm.  

Cinco De Mayo 

Brazos Nights: Cinco De Mayo(Waco Parks & Recreation ) 

Sunday is May 5 – Cinco De Mayo – but most folks are not waiting until Sunday for their Cinco de Mayo celebrations.   In fact, tonight, May 3, you are invited to the Brazos Nights Cinco De Mayo concert at Indian Spring Park.  Set out your lawn chair or spread your blanket and enjoy performances by Grammy-nominated La Energía Norteñaand, La Fiera de Ojinaga. Gates open at 6:30 p.m., and the opening act will begin at 7.  --- Brazos Nights concerts are always free so come on out and enjoy! 

Fiesta Familiar in Celebration of Cinco de Mayo(Viento Fuerte and First Baptist Woodway) 

Tomorrow, May 4, you are invited to another Cinco De Mayo celebration -- Fiesta Familiar will take place at Hewitt Park.  Hosted by Viento Fuerte church and First Woodway Baptist Church – this is a free community-wide event. Everyone is invited for pony rides, inflatables, live music, games, face painting, a hamburger and hotdog cookout, plus paletas!  The fiesta kicks off at 6 p.m.  

Fundraisers In Town

May 2 - May 5 - Attic Treasures(Historic Waco Foundation)

This weekend is Attic Treasures, a huge antique and other-fun-stuff sale benefitting the Historic Waco Foundation. From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and again tomorrow - and then from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday - you are invited to hunt through treasures galore in search of that special something that you might not even know you need.  Attic Treasures will take place at 4328 West Waco Drive, which you may remember as the former home of the Office Max in the shopping center at the corner of Valley Mills and Waco Drive.  

Annual Plant Sale Fundraiser(McLennan County Master Gardeners)

Tomorrow, May 4, is the McLennan County Master Gardener’s plant sale.  This is their major fundraiser for the year. The Master Gardeners know everything there is to know about what plants grow well in our area and how to grow them.  They will be offering annuals, perennials, hanging baskets, herbs, vegetables, and all kinds of other growing things.  They are particular experts at picking out plants that our Waco butterflies and hummingbirds enjoy.  The Master gardeners will be glad to sell you some plants and educate you about how to keep them alive and thriving.  The sale will take place tomorrow from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Westview Shopping Center at the corner of Valley Mills and Waco Drive.  Catty corner across Valley Mills from the shopping center where Attic Treasures is taking place. 

Sertoma Kite Festival(Sertoma Club of Waco)

Tomorrow, May 4, is also the Sertoma Kite Festival. The festival will include face painting, games, candy drops and of course all kinds of kites.  Free kites for the first 100 kids. Giant kite flying demonstrations (depending on the wind) and kites for sale.  All proceeds will benefit The Heart of Texas Sertoma Club. They use the money to provide hearing aids for hard of hearing children. The kite festival will take place from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Heart of Texas miniature aircraft club field in Speegleville Park. Admission is free.
 

Meals on Wheels Sunday Brunch(Meals on Wheels Waco)

On Sunday, May 5, at noon is the annual Meals on Wheels Sunday Brunch fundraiser.  This year the guest speakers will be Dr. Linda Livingstone, President of Baylor University and Bradley Ford, Assistant City Manager with the City of Waco.  They will be talking about the future of Baylor and Waco.  The brunch will take place at the Phoenix Ballroom on South 3rd street downtown.  Tickets are $65 which includes a delicious champagne brunch and a chance to shop some cool items at the silent auction.  To reserve your ticket or for more information, call Meals on Wheels Waco. 

Events Involving Free Stuff 

AMF Bowling Kids Fest(Westview Lanes ) and Sat – Free Comic Book Day Celebration!(Bankston’s Comics & Sports Collectibles )

Tomorrow is Kidsfest Day at the Westview Lanes on West Waco Drive.  Kids can bowl free and get free shoe rental from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.  Tomorrow is also Free Comic Book Day!  Bankston’s Comics and Collectibles on Valley Mills will be celebrating this joyous event from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  Stop by for live music, cosplay fun and of course free comic books. 

Kateleigh joined KWBU in January 2019. She is an Oklahoma native that is making the move to Waco after working as an All Things Considered host and producer at affiliate KOSU Radio in Oklahoma City. She is a former NPR Next Generation Radio Fellow, a Society of Professional Journalists award winner, an Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame recipient for ‘Outstanding Promise in Journalism’ and the Oklahoma Collegiate Media Association’s 2017 recipient for ‘College Newspaper Journalist of the Year.’ After finishing up her journalism degree early she decided to use her first year out of college to make the transition from print media to public radio. She is very excited to have joined KWBU and she is looking forward to all the opportunities it will bring - including providing quality journalism to all Texans.
