Act Locally Waco - Events October 11 - 17

This week on Act Locally Waco, Ashley Bean Thorton prepares us for a jam-packed week of fun, with Baylor Homecoming, a Waco Gospel Explosion to celebrate Doris Miller, Spooky Soda Science at the Dr. Pepper Museum and other ways to get involved around town. 

Thursday, Oct 10  - Baylor Homecoming(Baylor Homecoming) ⟶Thu Oct 10 thru Sat Oct 12

This is homecoming weekend for all the Baylor Alumni and fans out there.  The Extravaganza and Bonfire is tonight starting at 6 pm.  The parade starts at 8 tomorrow morning downtown on Austin Avenue and the game is at 3 pm tomorrow afternoon.  All the details and more homecoming fun are at baylor.edu/homecoming

Saturday, Oct 12 - Waco Gospel Explosion Doris Miller Centennial Birthday Commemoration(KZFrazier Drama) 

Tomorrow evening the Doris Miller Memorial Board invites you to join them for a Gospel Explosion to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Doris Miller’s birthday.  Doris Miller, for those of you who may be new to town, was a Waco hometown World War II hero.  He served valiantly during the attack on Pearl Harbor and was awarded the Navy Cross for his courage.  He was the first African-American sailor to receive that honor.   

The Gospel Explosion honoring his birthday will take place at the Grand Lodge of Texas at the corner of 7th and Columbus Avenue.  The doors open at 6pm and the show will start at 7pm.  Tickets are $25 - $35 depending on where you choose to sit. 

Sunday, Oct 13 - Brazos River 0.5K

On Sunday the local chapter of the Society of Lazy and Carefree Runners presents the 2nd Annual Brazos River 0.5K run!  All registered participants will receive a custom finisher’s medal, 0.5K sticker and t-shirt.  Participants will also receive a free beer to help with hydration - and don’t forget the costume contest! There will be prizes for the best male, female, group AND pet!  Proceeds will benefit the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. The “Run” will be held at 11 am on October 13 at Brazos Park East.  Registration is $32.50 at brazosriver05k.com

Tuesday, Oct 15 - 4th Annual Helping Hands Social Hour for Community Cancer Association(Baylor Club) 

Tuesday is the 4th annual Helping Hands Social Hour for the Community Cancer Association. Enjoy free hors d'oeuvres, a raffle, a silent auction, and music from Michael Saldana. The event will take place at the Baylor Club at McLane Stadium from 5pm – 7:30pm. Admission is free. All proceeds from the raffle and silent auction go to the Community Cancer Association. 

Thursday, Oct 17 - Remember Recess (Fundraiser)(Inspiración)

On Thursday, you are invited to put away your heels and break out your hi-tops and playground attire for the “Remember Recess” fundraiser benefitting Inspiracion.  The theme for the fundraiser will be “Night-Time in the School Yard” and it will be held from 7 – 10 PM at the Freight Icehouse and Yard Bar at 1613 James Avenue near Baylor University.  Tickets are $100. Inspiración is a nonprofit organization that partners with Waco ISD to serve families with children 0 to 4 years old who will be going to school at Alta Vista Elementary. The program provides parenting education classes and early childhood classes that help parents actively participate in the education of their children.    

Friday, Oct 11 - All-Steinway School 10th Anniversary Concert featuring Anderson & Roe Piano Duo(McLennan Community College) 

If you love the piano, you probably know that McLennan Community College is an “All-Steinway School,” and tonight they are hosting the All-Steinway School 10th Anniversary Concert featuring the Anderson and Roe Piano Duo.  

The performance will take place at the Ball Performing Arts Center on MCC campus, tonight from 7:30pm – 8:30pm.  Admission is $20. 

Tuesday, Oct 15 - Shakespeare Studio – Music, Magic, and Murder(Brotherwell Brewing)

Starting Tuesday you can join InSite Waco for their fall episode of Shakespeare Studio! This time, the cast will bring to new life to some of the bard's most magical, musical and murder-y moments! They will be spotlighting scenes, speeches, and songs from A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Tempest, A Winter's Tale, Hamlet, Macbeth, Richard III and more! Prepared to be charmed and transfixed. The shows all start at 7 pm under the stars at the Brotherwell Brewery and Taproom's back yard. Admission is $10. 

Saturday, Oct 12 - Spooky Soda Science(Dr Pepper Museum & Free Enterprise Institute)

If you are looking for something that will be fun for the whole family, we have several options for you.  Saturday is “Spooky Soda Science” day at the Dr Pepper Museum. From 11 am – 2 pm, visitors can decorate a balloon based on their favorite Halloween character, then use carbon dioxide to bring their scary creation to life. This event is included in the general admission price of $10 and will take place in the museum courtyard. 

Sunday, Oct 13 - How Bout These Apples Family Funday(Historic Waco Foundation)

On Sunday join the Historic Waco Foundation for another of their fabulous family fun days!  The them for this fun day will be “How about these apples?”  They are celebrating the changing leaves and crisp weather with all kinds of activities inspired by our favorite fall fruit. APPLES.  They promise this will be by far their tastiest Funday, so you and your family will not want to miss. All of this Apple-y fun will take place on Sunday afternoon from 1pm – 4pm at the Earle Napier Kinnard House Museum at 814 4th Street. Admission is $10 per family.  

Wednesday, Oct 16 - Meet the Scientists: National Fossil Day (Mayborn Museum)(Mayborn Museum) 

Wednesday is National Fossil Day!  National Fossil Day and the Mayborn Museum is celebrating with a special Fossil Day “Meet the Scientist” presentation.  From 10am - 1 pm on Wednesday, you are invited to the Mayborn to join faculty and students of the Department of Geosciences at Baylor University to learn more about those fascinating fossils.  Admission to 'Meet the Scientists' is included with your regular admission.

Savage Finds October Flea Market – Silo Celebration Weekend(Savage Finds)

If you are already thinking ahead to your Christmas Shopping, you will be happy to know that starting on Thursday, Waco, Texas, will be transformed into a shopper’s paradise.   Magnolia’s 5th Annual Silobration kicks off Thursday complete with 40+ artisan vendors and food trucks from all over the country.  

In addition to Silobration you can also browse LuluBelle’s Fall Market Days at 420 South 5th Street and Savage Finds October flea Market at 324 S. 6th Street.  All three markets will be open Thursday, Friday and Saturday. 

Kateleigh joined KWBU in January 2019. She is an Oklahoma native that is making the move to Waco after working as an All Things Considered host and producer at affiliate KOSU Radio in Oklahoma City. She is a former NPR Next Generation Radio Fellow, a Society of Professional Journalists award winner, an Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame recipient for ‘Outstanding Promise in Journalism’ and the Oklahoma Collegiate Media Association’s 2017 recipient for ‘College Newspaper Journalist of the Year.’ After finishing up her journalism degree early she decided to use her first year out of college to make the transition from print media to public radio. She is very excited to have joined KWBU and she is looking forward to all the opportunities it will bring - including providing quality journalism to all Texans.
