Wildfire north of Fredericksburg is 40% contained as 'near critical' fire conditions continue

Smoke the 8,640-acre wildfire in Gillespie County cast a pall over the Austin area Saturday afternoon.

The Texas A&M Forest Service said the Crabapple Fire north of Fredericksburg remains 40% contained as of 11:06 a.m. Sunday, following a night of diminished winds and continued work on the ground to contain the fire.

Zion Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg has been set up as shelter for anyone in the area who is asked to evacuate.

The National Weather Service has forecast near-critical fire weather conditions for Central Texas till 8 p.m. Sunday, with wind gusts up to 25 miles per hour; low relative humidity; and dry vegetation. People are advised to avoid outdoor burning.

The wildfire started Saturday about 80 miles west of Austin and led to hazy skies and the smell of smoke throughout the city.

The Texas A&M Forest Service initially reported the fire's size as 400 acres, but it grew quickly to 8,640 acres. Sunday afternoon, the Forest Service said the fire had actually burned 9,500 acres.

The Austin Fire Department said it received calls from people in the Austin area who were experiencing smoke that it believed was from the wildfire.
