A new poll published Tuesday found that President Donald Trump's approval rating among Texans has fallen into negative territory, while also finding that most Texans are against banning the sale of THC products.
The poll, published bytheTexas Politics Projectand the University of Texas, surveyed over 1,200 registered voters between June 6 and June 16 on a wide variety of topics, including Trump’s approval rating, the sale of THC and the overall opinion on the 89th legislative session.
Trump's job performance rating
According to the study, Trump's approval rating in Texas has fallen for the third consecutive time in the Texas Politics Project's polling conducted during his second term — from 52% in February to now 44%.
When participants were asked about their overall approval of Trump, 44% said they disapprove strongly, 7% disapproved somewhat, 5% neither approved nor disapproved, 17% approved somewhat, and 27% approved strongly.
When broken down along party lines, the majority of Republicans still approved of the president's performance. But even in his own party, Trump's approval rating still fell slightly from 92% in February to 87% in June.
As for Democrats, their overall disapproval of Trump has remained relatively steady with 94% disapproving, 85% of whom strongly disapprove.
The biggest shift in approval, according to the study, came among Texas independents, who saw an increase in disapproval from 48% in February to 60% in June.
A further breakdown of approval based on specific policy areas can be found on the Texas Politics Project'swebsite.
Support/opposition to banning the sale of THC products
On Sunday, AbbottvetoedSenate Bill 3, which would have banned the sale of virtually all THC hemp products in Texas. Abbott has included regulating rather than banning THC products as one of the top priorities for the upcoming special session.
While responses for the survey were collected before Abbott's veto, it still collected residents' opinions on an outright ban on the sale of nearly all THC products in Texas.
According to the survey, the majority of respondents, 53%, opposed outlawing the sale of hemp-based THC products, with 38% strongly opposing it. Broken down by party, 39% of Republicans, 68% of Democrats and 58% of independents opposed the ban.
State Legislature approval
The survey found that 45% of respondents disapproved of the Texas Legislature, with only 11% of Democrats or independents approving of the Legislature's job.
In terms of how Texans thought the Legislature had affected their everyday lives, 22% said the Legislature had made their lives better, while only 3% said "a lot better." According to the Texas Politics Project, Texans' evaluations were overall more negative than those recorded at the end of 2023. As of June 2025, 21% said the Legislature had made their lives "somewhat worse," and 16% said it had made their lives "a lot worse."
All of the survey's results had a +/- 2.83% margin of error.
