Former Baylor President Robert B. Sloan Jr. Dies at 75
Robert B. Sloan Jr., former president of Baylor University and current president of Houston Christian University, has died following a sudden health event. He was 75.
Houston Christian University officials say Sloan suffered a major medical emergency on July 3. Despite extensive efforts by medical personnel and the presence of his family, he died early the following morning.
Sloan led Houston Christian University for nearly two decades. In Waco, he is remembered for his years at Baylor, where he served on the religion faculty, was the founding dean of George W. Truett Theological Seminary, and led the university as president from 1995 to 2005.
In a statement released July 4, Baylor University President Linda A. Livingstone reflected on Sloan’s lasting impact, pointing to the university’s Baylor 2012 vision as one of his most significant contributions—helping guide Baylor’s growth while maintaining its historic Christian mission.
Houston Christian University says a succession plan will move forward in the coming days, while the campus community takes time to grieve. Memorial service details have not yet been announced.
Both universities are asking for prayers for Sloan’s wife, Sue, their children and grandchildren, and the many students, colleagues, and communities touched by his life and leadership.
