After nearly 200 years of service, the Texas Rangers law enforcement agency has named Wende Wakeman as its first ever female major.

"History was made in Waco this week as Wende Wakeman, a long time employee of the Texas Department of Safety and the Texas Rangers, became the first ever female major for the law enforcement agency.

Wakeman has been given command of the Waco-based Company “F,” which covers areas of Texas including south Dallas, Waco, north-west Austin and San Antonio.

Wakeman will now oversee three lieutenants and 27 Rangers across the state, with her new headquarters located behind the Texas Ranger Museum here in Waco.

Wakeman’s journey with law enforcement began when she joined the DPS in 1998 as a Highway Patrol trooper. And, this isn’t the first time she’s made history — she also became the first female Ranger promoted to lieutenant in 2014.

In a statement to the Waco-Tribune Herald, Wakeman said that, 'this moment in Ranger history is only possible because of the dedication and the sacrifice of so many that have come before.'
