Discussions about the upcoming November 7th election and it's implications for Midway ISD continued today at the annual State of the District Luncheon, hosted by the Hewitt Chamber of Commerce.

The Hewitt Chamber of Commerce met today for the annual State of the District Luncheon.

Midway Independent School District Superintendent, Dr. Chris Allen provided updates on the school district and on the upcoming November 7th election, where on the ballot Midway ISD is asking voters to approve a nine-cent tax rate that the district says will help to retain teachers, maintain student programs and provide full-time, onsite security personnel for elementary schools.

If the proposal passes, taxpayers can expect a reduction in their overall tax rate.

Midway ISD is seeking a 3-cent increase in the tax rate to fund necessary maintenance and operations. This increase will be precisely balanced by a corresponding 3-cent decrease in the allocation for debt payments.

Additionally, the district is working to reduce the tax rate by approximately 10.7 cents through various means, including exploring potential homestead exemptions.

It’s important to note that the ballot will not educate voters on these specific details or inform them that they are voting for an overall tax rate decrease.

Voters will only see that they are voting for an increase of the operations budget, making it crucial for citizens to go into voting centers informed on what the ballot truly means within the context of the state-required language.

October 10th is the deadline to register to vote, and early voting begins October 23rd through November 3rd.
