On Sunday, October 8th the Imagination Library of Waco hosted the first ever Great Waco Duck Race event to raise funds in order to provide more books to children in McLennan county. Hundreds of attendees watched as 6,000 rubber ducks were dropped from the Washington Avenue Bridge and began to float in the opposite direction.

The Imagination Library of Waco hosted the first ever, “Great Waco Duck Race” this past weekend.

Families from all over central Texas gathered at Indian Springs Park in Waco to see 6,000 rubber ducks be dumped into the Brazos river over the Washington Avenue Bridge.

Individuals were able to adopt a duck to participate in the race, with all proceeds going toward expanding the services of the Imagination Library of Waco.

Due to the river current, the ducks floated the opposite direction they were intended to go. Causing Waco police, Waco fire, and boy scout troop 497 to scoop the ducks out of the river.

The competition quickly turned into a “duck pluck,” where four winners were randomly pulled from the thousands of floating rubber ducks.

While the race didn’t turn out how attendees had imagined, it didn’t stop them from enjoying the sight.

Hannah and Shawn Forsyth say it made the event all the more fun.

SHAWN FORSYTH: “It’s hilarious.”

HANNAH FORSYTH: “It’s really funny, I’m not mad about it.”

SHAWN FORSYTH: “This is almost more fun though, it’s entertaining.”

The library announced that they were able to raise enough funds through their sponsorship with Rockefeller Credit Union to add another zip code to their areas of service, 76657, the city of McGregor.

Now families in McGregor with children under the age of five will be eligible to sign up with the Imagination Library of Waco and receive one book a month, free of charge.
