The national weather service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning for most of central and north Texas starting tonight. This includes Waco and the rest of McLennan county.

The warning lasts until Thursday morning. Temperatures are expected to drop as low as 16 degrees, with wind chills as low as 5 degrees and gusts up to 25 miles per hour. There is also a chance of rain showers, bringing the possibility of icy roads.

In response, the city of Waco is opening the Waco-Multipurpose Center as a warming center starting at 8 p.m. on Tuesday. The warming center is open to any individuals who may be at risk due to extreme cold.

Bottled water, blankets, cots and meals ready-to-eat (or MRE’s) will be available on site. Pets are welcome as long as they are crated.

The warming center is located at 1020 Elm Street and remains open until 10 a.m Thursday.
