Baylor is home to some of the most competitive women’s sports teams in the country, yet fan support remains an ongoing challenge that fails to reflect their success.
From volleyball to softball to soccer, Baylor’s student-athletes dedicate countless hours to their craft, competing at the highest level and bringing pride to the green and gold. However, despite their achievements, their games often lack the same energy and attendance as men’s sports. The passion and talent are there— what’s missing is the fan support to match.
“I think there’s a big misconception that women’s sports aren’t as exciting as men’s, but as someone who’s seen a lot of women’s sports here at Baylor, I think these games are some of the most exciting we have. When the crowd is there—whether it’s a no-hitter in softball, a rivalry game in women’s basketball, or penalty kicks in soccer—those games are full of energy, and these athletes need and deserve support. In those exciting moments, it’s the fans that make the difference,” Assistant Director of Baylor Athletics’ broadcast department Abby Stokes said
While athletes prepare for games the same way, as the intensity in the crowd rises, so does the way the athletes perform. “When we see people show up for us and bring energy to the games, it
empowers us to play for them,” Houston senior and Baylor volleyball player Allie Sczech said.
Reflecting on her time as a Baylor cheerleader following her final season, Nashville, Tennessee, senior Bryn Owens said she’s “seen a big improvement in attendance at women’s games but would love to see the stands full,” as there is a “huge difference in the atmosphere when the games are full and the fans are on their feet.”
“When you attend a women’s sports game, it’s always entertaining,” Sczech said. “It’s unique to see female athletes push themselves, and being at a match allows you to be part of that. It leaves a lasting impact on both us as athletes and the fans, showing that women are capable of doing hard things. You’ll leave feeling encouraged by what female athletes are accomplishing.”
Baylor Athletics continues to push for greater student and community involvement, but in the end, it’s up to the fans to show up, show out, and support these women’s teams.
