7th Street Plaza gets new mural

The 7th Street Plaza will be redeveloped as a part of Creative Waco’s Apprenticeship Program. The new design will include an interactive street mural.

“We wanted to encourage interaction, education and playfulness. And we wanted something that felt fresh, bold positive and inviting, making it really stand out as a visual landmark," Creative Waco CEO Fiona Bond said.

Bond told the City Council Tuesday that the board game themed plaza will include elements like a spinner on the wall and virtual dice to make it easy for visitors to interact with.

Each square on the board includes prompts like: “What made you laugh today? What three words best describe you? Show us a dance move, tell a bad joke.”

The plaza’s design also includes spaces for stages and market-style tables, allowing the space to also serve as an event venue.

As part of the Apprenticeship Program, high school artists are brought in to help with the painting of the mural. Bond told the council she expects the mural to be completed by July.

There will be a community paint day for the 7th Street Plaza on May 31st.

Molly-Jo, or MJ as her friends know her, joined KWBU in 2024 as the station's Multimedia Reporter. Originally from San Antonio, Tx, she grew up on local TV journalism and knew that when she decided to pursue journalism as a career, she wanted to find a local beat. Molly-Jo graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in May 2024 with a Bachelor's in Journalism. While there she served as the Audio Editor for UT's student paper, The Daily Texan, and worked with The Drag Audio. She also interned for The Texas Standard, where her feature on a San Antonio nonprofit earned her a statewide award for health reporting (and becoming the first intern to do so). When she is not scoping out stories, MJ enjoys reading a good book, hiking or learning new crafts.
