The Hilltop Heights development is planned for the intersection of Kendall Lane and Loop 340. It will consist of 63 single family lots on just under 11 acres.
Mayor Pro Temp Andrea Barefield says this is just one solution to the ongoing housing crisis.
"Everyone deserves the opportunity for housing," she said.
Over the last few months, the developer has appeared before the council on three separate occasions. Council initially opposed the development, but said the developer made sufficient changes to move forward with the plan – including adding sidewalks and having a traffic plan approved by the Texas Department of Transportation.
Community members from the Timberlake area, where the new development is located, asked the council to deny the plan citing traffic concerns and concerns about potential “bad influences: on the neighborhood.
Council member Darius Ewing, who initially opposed the development, responded to those concerns.
"More housing doesn’t mean worse neighbors," Ewing said.
The council approved the motion to rezone the land to a Planned Unit Development. The houses are expected to sell for around $250,000.
