On Monday, State Senator Brian Birdwell announced he would not be seeking reelection.

In his announcement to voters, Birdwell gave no reason for his decision not to seek reelection.

He chairs the Border Security and Natural Resources Committees. He also sits on the Nominations, State Affairs and Water, Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committees as well as the Texas Commission on Judicial Selection.

In 2023, he was influential in killing a bill that would have lightened restrictions on the dairy permitting process. Opponents worried that the bill would make it easier for new dairies to move up stream, threatening the water supply in Lake Waco.

Birdwell’s term ends in 2026. He has held the seat since a 2010 special election.

District 22, which Bridwell represents, includes all of McLennan County, plus nine other counties in Central Texas.

State representative David Cook, R-Mansfield, has announced his candidacy for the District 22 seat.
