Heavy storms over the Fourth of July weekend dumped 1.8 inches of water on the Waco region. That’s about how much water Waco usually sees in all of July.
This follows a month of above average rain in June, which saw parts of the Riverwalk walking trail and Lake Waco recreational parks flooded.
Before the weekend, officials say, the lake was already full. Then it rose another 3 feet into the 50 foot flood pool.
Lake Manager Michael Champagne says this is nothing to worry about, even with more rain in the forecast since the primary goal of Lake Waco is to provide drinking water and flood control.
Champagne said in an email the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, who manage water levels in the lake, are watching water level downstream of the lake to determine when to let out water from the lake.
Until then, parks around the lake will see some closures from flooding. Boat ramps are closed at Flat Rock, Lacy Point and Koehne parks and some campsites at Airport Park are closed.
