Waco ISD Board members and City staff unveil the new Lion's Way sign during the Community Pep Rally on September 24.

Waco High School kicked off its homecoming week Wednesday with a community pep rally that included the unveiling of a new street name outside the school.

The stretch of 42nd Street between Colcord and Bosque avenues is now called Lions Way, honoring the school’s mascot.

Waco High graduate and current Waco ISD trustee Taylor Bledsoe said during the ceremony that the sign represents more than just a name change.
“It is a reminder to our students that they matter to this community,” he said.

City Councilmember Josh Borderud, who helped push for the change, said the idea has been in the works nearly as long as the school’s new building.
“Part of the success of the bond election is restoring a sense of pride, enhancing a sense of pride, at Waco High,” Borderud said.

The newly named Lions Way is now a permanent reminder of the school’s legacy and its place in the community.
