Portions of I-35 through Waco will be closed this weekend between New Road and 12th Street as crews work on the Valley Mills flyover.
Starting Friday night at midnight, crews will begin removing the Valley Mills Drive flyover to Interstate 35. The main lanes of I-35 are expected to remain closed until Sunday morning.
"So you’ll see the majority of your impact Saturday during the day," Jake Smith, spokesperson for TxDOT said.
To help keep traffic flowing on the frontage roads, interstate crossings at 17th and 18th streets, New Road, and Irving Lee Street and Primrose Drive also will be closed during the work.
Smith said if you have to travel through Waco this weekend, be prepared for delays.
"The best thing to do is know before you go," Smith explained. "Check in with local news, drivetexas.org or map sharing services and see what the traffic conditions look like and give yourself enough time."
The work is part of a four-year, $234 million project to expand Interstate 35 and correct overpasses through Waco. Following the removal of the flyover, the Valley Mills overpass will also be redesigned as a diverging diamond interchange.
The entire project is expected to be completed in 2029.
