I Hear America Singing - Political Songs

We go back into the Archives for this week’s show featuring songs about Presidential Elections.

Music has long been a lively part of any political campaign. Oscar Brand recorded an album of those songs in 1961 and then updated it in 1999. We will hear him singing For Jefferson and Liberty, Get On a Raft With Taft, and I Like Ike among others. The 97th Regimental String Band performs Lincoln and Liberty.

In 1964, the Chad Mitchell Trio was on the LBJ bandwagon with Barry’s Boys (later resurrected as Ronnie’s Boys and W’s Boys). Walt Kelly serenades us with G0-Go Pogo in favor of his perennial candidate from 1952 through 1976. John Stewart wrote Survivors for Bobby Kennedy’s campaign in 1968; Hillary Clinton used it for her campaigns in 2008 and 2016.

The Sons of the Pioneers add some social commentary with When Our Old Age Pension Check Comes to Our Door. Arlo Guthrie joins in with the Tom Paxton song I’m Changing My Name to Chrysler. To hear these and more, tune in to I Hear America Singing this weekend right here on KWBU and don’t forget to get out and vote in November!
