SHOUT! Black Gospel Music Moments - Melvin Boyd and the Fabulous Ohio Wonders

“I’m Going to Work” is a sterling gospel release by the powerful vocalist Melvin Boyd and the Fabulous Ohio Wonders.

The Gospel Corner label was a subsidiary of Proverb Records – and both specialized in the gospel music of the rich Southern California scene. It was best-known for releases by the Rev. Prince Dixon but a number of hard-working preachers and quartets had 45s and LPs for Gospel Corner, including the Oxnard Jubilees, the Rev. James Robbins, and the Mighty Gospel Revelators of San Diego.

One Gospel Corner release that’s well worth seeking out is this Melvin Boyd and the Fabulous Ohio Wonders 45, the slow and soulful “I’m Going to Work.” Boyd was a powerhouse of a singer and songwriter, one whose voice will remind you of Clarence Carter or Solomon Burke. “I’m Going to Work” is another one of the thousands of wonderful disks loaned to the Black Gospel Music Preservation Program from the collection of gospel historian Bob Marovich... and we’re forever grateful!
