During Jessy Dixon’s more than 50-year career in gospel music, he wrote 100s of songs and sang with nearly everybody, from Mahalia Jackson to a long touring relationship with Paul Simon. He was proudly associated with Chicago his entire life and was a beloved institution there.
In 1964, he joined the small Omega Baptist Church Radio Choir for a self-produced LP titled Joy Comes in the Morning. Just a few years removed from starting out as a South Side storefront church, the Omega Baptist Church’s 100-voice Radio Choir is a powerhouse – as is obvious from the title track, with Dixon singing his heart out to keep up with the choir’s dynamic vocals.
