The Supreme Voices of Fresno, California, had an interesting journey. They were composed of singers and musicians from two families – Joe and Dave Kinsby, and Dave’s son, David Jr. ... and musicians Leonard, Phillip and Melvin Sanders. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the group – clad in their trademark tuxedos – toured incessantly, opening for major acts like the Gospel Keynotes and the Mighty Clouds of Joy. And yet, during this time, they only released three songs on a Song Bird label sampler.
The Voices tried again, self-producing and releasing the It’ll All be Over LP in 1980 – but, for whatever reason, they just couldn’t break through. Today, the Supreme Voices are frequently included on re-released collections of soulful gospel music, including the impassioned, raspy gospel track, “I Made a Vow,” from their Song Bird debut, which introduces a whole new generation of gospel music lovers to this under-rated group.
